Speaking of…Decision

As a life and business coach, and master Neuro-Linguistic (NLP) practitioner, I help my clients by focusing on three critical areas – Discovery, Direction, and Decision. Once you have discovered your authentic qualities and have gotten clear on the direction you would like to take, it is time for a decision to be made to travel toward your dreams. Until the decision to commit is there, the dream will remain a dream and not a goal.

So many times in our lives we “decide not to decide” which, is in reality, indecision. It is easier to spend more time weighing the pros and cons than it is to actually roll up our sleeves and get down to work. “What if I fail? What if I succeed? What if I really don’t like it after all?” These are all stumbling blocks and stall tactics that keep us from moving forward. It’s like the man who wouldn’t go back to school to become a doctor because he would be 50 years old by the time he graduated. His teacher asked him the question, “How old will you be then if you don’t graduate?” Just remember that it’s OK to change your mind – if the circumstances call for a change – and you won’t feel trapped or restricted when making the decision.

Another roadblock to our decision to act is the little voice inside our head that worries about “what will so-and-so think?” I recently worked with one client on that very thing. She found herself paralyzed from taking any action because she had nagging thoughts of others expectations of her. This “boundary” issue is common and a very real obstacle for many people. Through our coaching sessions I was able to help her get through this block and move forward in her goal setting and action plans. We must learn to say “yes” when we want to say “yes” and “no” when we want to say “no.” A very good book on this subject is Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. Next week I’ll talk more on the subject of boundaries in this blog.

Now is the time to begin, not tomorrow or next week. It isn’t whether you will fail or succeed but that you “do” that matters! Once you “decide to decide” you will be free to create an action plan to help you achieve your goals. Step by step, day-by-day, week after week, the goal will become clearer and closer than you ever imagined possible. Just remember that there is no right or wrong. There is just you and your future. Believe it. Do it. Do it today.
